There's another side to the GMO argument that I don't understand when it comes to making beer. I don't care which side of the debate you are on, pro-GMO or anti-GMO. Personally I don't have an issue with GMO, but if you do that is your choice. Believe what you want to believe.

The thing I don't understand is that when making beer, the malted grain is mashed to convert starch into sugars. There aren't any genes in a sugar molecule, so what is the big deal whether the grain is GMO or not?

I'm not sure why he was so compelled to spend so much time on it.

Because, as I explain in this post, I feel very strongly that the growth of the organic food industry is increasing mortality rates due to starvation in poorer regions of the world, thus I feel it's unethical. Likewise, spreading misinformation with the goal of discouraging adoption of GMO crops (that have the potential to save lives and feed millions who would otherwise starve to death) is irresponsible.

So, GMO beer tastes great, BUT is it less filling? (it IS a Miller Lite thread)

I want to make a Miller Lite homebrew because I want my beer to be triple hopped. TRIPLE! That's like THREE TIMES as much hops as my usual homebrews!

I have a master's degree in English, so I can answer that.

English sentences and grammar are mostly built around verbs, not nouns (subject). Sometimes the nouns are are explicit and sometimes they are implicit.

There is, as someone mentioned, the "you understood" construction.

"Shut the door." This is a proper sentence without an explicit subject. Some people call that "you understood" because it is understood that "you" is the implied subject. That's just an example of how sentences can be constructed without writing/saying the subject.

What Frank did was similar, but where Zeptrey is mistaken is what subject Frank implied. If we take a broader look at the text, we see that Frank uses the same construction again.

1. Do a little better health and calorie wise.

2. Don't want to support the GMO producers and

3. like a clean, light beer without chemicals.

4. I drink seven to ten beers a week. Maybe 12.*

In all 4 of these phrases, the implied or explicit subject is I. Not you. He is explaining how he lives his life and chooses food. He is not telling you or anyone else that they should do that.

How's that for linguistic and discourse analysis?

*Interestingly, there is another example of elliptical construction in line 4. When he says "Maybe 12," he actually means "Maybe [I drink] 12 [beers in a week]. There is a lot in that sentence that is left to context, including, again, the subject "I." He does not like to use I.

But I still don't understand what the harm is in NOT eating GMO food. Or the harm in eating organic. You say you don't want people to mislead others, but as far as the ways people can be misled, this seems like a fairly harmless one.

So what you're saying is wvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

Sorry about that. Must have dozed off there. Got drool all over the V key, damn.

Wow - What a thread! I just read through this thing to see how doing a homebrew version of miller lite would be... boy was I in for a surprise.

One thing that is never mentioned - freedom of choice - if you want to buy stuff with only non organic gmo stuff - go for it!

If you don't want to consume all the extra stuff included with with non-organic and gmo stuff - then don't!

But wait a minute - I can't do that! The food industry makes sure that we can't have common sense labeling laws so we know what we are paying for and putting in our bodies. I think this is the real problem. Until there is some transparency, these arguments will continue.

The clone is doing good. Just took a sample! Can taste the hallertau ... Nicely.... Was so simple to throw together. When I crack one open I will take a pic and post it. When I rack it to secondary it gets a pinch of amylase enzyme for a little abv boost. It should finish at 3.5% abv

I like to buy higher quality foods/drink whether it's a favorite brand this or organic that. I bought the organic in bulk from Midwest for a bulk bag. Came out to 20 cents cheaper per pound than what I pay locally here in NY.

Hey folks! Thanks for replying to the thread in depth.

I was just making some statements about what / hour / why i consume certain goods and agree the user Kombat was being antagonistic.

It would appear to me the user Kombat just wanted to argue or had a need to prove a point. I'm not sure why he was so compelled to spend so much time on it.

Thanks for breaking down the thread!

I'm proud of my part in the derail.

No problem, I can do it again.

So in English, you don't necessarily need to... Oh, wait, you weren't interested?

I made a couple of batches of the crop chopper light American lager in the recipe's section. Both times it turned out fantastic. I had comments coming from people who drink commercial beer like, I'd buy this.

It seems so right to drink this type of beer when it's above 90 outside.

I haven't finished reading the whole thread yet; I've just skipped through it. So as of now I don't have anything of substance to add to the discussion. But you might want to consider the gentleman's user name....:p

I did. I figure he's one of those people that like to always be right or have a need to prove how smart he is... But anyways.. The beer sample was spot on. Tasted like flat light beer and I think I may bottle half as is and bottle the rest after I set it over a few pounds of local fresh cherries. (Maybe)

Drinking Sam Smith organic chocolate stout right now. I like the first few tastes but after that it's too thick / heavy.

I did a quick search for the cropper chopper.. Didn't come up.. Do you have it handy?

I still get down on some BMC if the time is right, like the race (Indy, not Nascar), carb day, etc. Its cheaper and more practical to put away 18 of those throughout the course of the day instead of dropping 45$ on 3 six packs of a craft beer of my choice.

As for GMO, I think its a wash. That is my opinion though. If people want to go GMO free, by all means, more power to you. Just know you are missing out on seedless watermelons...

I had a nurse in the OR oneday jump me about Splenda and another food I ate and how it did this and that, bla bla bla. I kindly interupted her and stated that the bottle of rum and two packs of cigarettes I consumed on the weekends would probably fare way worse than the Splenda, but I thanked her for her concern.

I have a hard time imagining a more challenging beer to brew than Miller Lite. There is NOTHING to hide behind. I am glad people are doing it...I think it would be a great way to really learn about your system.

I was very surprised at the taste of the ml clone. The sample tasted much better / a bit more malt taste to it and the hops aroma was bright (hallertau)

I don't mind Ml. So.. Logical for me to put down a home brew batch for about $10 (ish)

Are you really going for a specific Miller Lite flavor? Or just an easy drinking lighter beer?
