Like the thread title I'm rack 5 gallons of mead, noticed there's a 2-3 inch layer I guess which is whiteish/opaque that's thready from top down. Then the mead is clear until the yeast cake. Any ideas?
It looks like a LOT of headspace in that carboy but it's hard to tell from the picture. If it is, it could very well be something like a lacto infection. I hope not, but it can happen. How long has it been sitting like that, with that much headspace? If it's only been a short time, it may not be infected.
