These were on sale at the grocery store, here in memphis, so I picked up a sixer. Ive never had a black lager before so Im not sure if McSorely of NYC is indicitive of the style, but I was not a fan at all. It tasted barbeque-esque. Is that what a black lager is supposed to taste like? What's the consensus of the group about Black Lagers.

I don't know anything about the style, but I gotta tell you, the one time I went to NYC, we spent 2 of the 3 nights at McSorley's, its just so much fun. They serve two beers, light beer and dark beer. The beers are nameless, and "styleless", but they were both very drinkable, and we ended up having a phenomenal time.

I wouldn't call the beer a "fine craft beer" or anything, but considering the atmosphere of the pub, the mannerisms of the bartenders, and the extreme drinkability of the beer, those were some of the best nights I've had in a long time.

I've had black lager ( Schwarz Lager ) on tap at the Bohemian Beer Hall in Astoria, Queens, NY. I don't remember which brand it was, but it was a German import. It was clean, roasty and delicious. I could drink it all night and I did!

I have been to McSorley's in NYC numerous times. Love the place. Angry old Irish men serving glasses at an obnoxiously fast pace. You can't go there for a "beer or two".

The bottled beer is nothing like the tap versions in the city.

As far as black lagars go, I have a had a few and I tend to like them. Xingu (brazillian beer) was a good one. I also had some costa rica beer when I was there on my honeymooon that was really good.

McSorley's is awesome first of all. Only light and dark there. Slightly small beers, but they are cheap and come QUICK!

Now, the black lager... I am a huge fan of Kostrizer (probably the no-name black lager mentioned above) and have had a few others. The McSorley's is a different taste, almost a little smoked. I'm guessing they are going for a different taste, which is why it is an Irish Black Lager instead of a Swarzbier.

Gonna have to check next time to see if they are selling it at the bar now.

Babe Ruth had a favorite seat there you know...

I thought the dark beer there was a porter? I was there for the first time last week and it was awesome. I drank that cream/bitter/whatever "light" beer like it was going out of style. That is seriously a delicious and supremely drinkable brew.
