I have poked around the intertubes for a while but am at a loss. Maredsous is made by Duvel under license from the Abbey. It is bottle conditioned. Same strain as regular ferm?

thanks

if it is you can propagate the yeast from the bottom of the bottle.

Same strain as Duvel. Wyeast 1388 or White Labs WLP570.

From Brew Like a Monk, page 89:

The yeast was taken from a culture out of a bottle conditioned McEwan's Scotch Ale after World War 1. The culture had between ten and twenty strains, and De Clerck "took them apart" to isolate one. Neven said the brewers use a single strain today, for the Maredsous beers as well as Duvel--but that "circumstances for the strain are different when used for bottle conditioning."

Also from page 90:

Primary fermentation: Yeast pitched at 61 to 64, rises to 79 to 84, 5 days.

Also, if you're looking to emulate Maredsous 8, here's the info from the book page 90:

OG 1.069
ABV 8.1%
Apparent degree of attenuation: 83%
IBU 29
Malts: Pilsener, caramalt, roasted malt
Adjuncts: Dextrose
Hops: Styrian Goldings, Saaz

Primary and yeast, as above.

Secondary: 2 weeks at 46.

Bottle conditioned with same yeast as primary.
