hello everyone,

i'm about to brew a honey nut brown ale and my white labs british ale yeast is just past its best before date.

my very limited brewing library isn't specific enough for my confidence level. can anyone give me a hand with the steps of making a starter?

thanks for any help,

shane

Thats the thread I used to make my first one. Just think of it as brewing a beer but only about a pint or so.

I just read through the thread in EP's link and everyone seems to do their starters with an airlock on top of the starter jar. But I've been reading up on this with the intent to begin using starters made from previously used yeast. I found this article, which is very in depth and basically says that the airlock method is the LEAST efficient way to start yeast. They say, as I interpret it, that a MUCH better method would be to cap it tighly and shake it vigorously every once in a while or (if you've got the spare $$$) to use a magnetic stirrer to continuously aggitate/aerate.

Any thoughts on this? Like I said I've never really made a starter - just rehydrated some dry once.
