Hi there-

Looking to split up a huge brick of expired US-05 (04-24). Of course will be tested for viability (a la bread yeast proofing in sugar water). I assume this has at least a decade of life left.

My packing method would consist of opening the brick under my flow hood and transferring to smaller packages there. Then vacuum sealed in my chamber sealer in a regular 4mil vac bag. Can also nitrogen purge if desired. Im thinking $20 for 500g, $15/250g shipped? Maybe a buck or two more if you want nitro flushed and/or in a mylar retort bag.

Any takers? I just thought it would be a fun experiment and if not, keep my septic tank healthy lol....

@lumpher Great suggestion about the results thread! Full disclosure I do not know the provenance, but I figure proofing it would suss that out? FWIW the brick is hard as a rock (and heavy!). If it's not good after 10 mins obviously im not passing anything along. It was from a home-brew store on eBay that seems legit, has not thousands but a couple of hundred reviews, 100% positive.

Ok sounds good. Just for the heck of it while I was making dinner I proofed some US-05 w 02/16 exp date, so from 02/13. Worked like a charm (see pics w 20 mins proofing). I will break open the big pack hopefully this weekend. Thanks!

Have you performed a vitality test on the product from the large block? How did it compare to this other sealed (old) packet?

I have not yet, had a busy week and now I'm trying to figure out logistics of getting everything transferred and sealed under my flow hood. This brick is huge! It may take me a few more days.

Hey all, I haven't forgotten about this, I just want to have everything setup before I do this whole process once (well, twice, since I need to open the brick, proof it, post the results, and then make sure everyone is still on board). Thank you very much for your patience. Dealing with this volume of yeast is a new one for me! I am on it!

The 'big brick' has waited this long, it won't mind some slight delays. Will watch for your next update.

Howdy folks and apologies for the delay. I got the 'flow hood' setup and realized I bought a fume hood instead. What an idiot! So it's going to take a bit more time to see if I can reverse the flow of this thing. I still havent opened the yeast. Really sorry for the delay. I will be back in touch once I fix it and get the test done and see who's still interested...

Hey folks apologies had a health detour/derail but back on my feet in a limited sense. Will get it tested tomorrow or Wednesday and will have it packaged at the same time and see who's still interested. Really sorry for the delay.

Got it all packaged up. I just did everything in 500g packs for simplicity. Proofed up nicely. DM me if you still want some. Apologies for the delay.

I couldnt figure out the static electricity thing with the yeast/vac bag interplay so there is a random amount outside of the seal and some in the actual seal area. But all bags are solid.

$20/500g shipped USPS priority mail.
