Are you a diesel mechanic or do you work on cars?

I was working on cars mostly, but I worked on a few bike's, small engines like lawnmowers, and I've messed with a few diesel's. But to answer your question, I worked on cars.

I really want a desk job now. I really like working with my hands and all, but I want to keep it as a hobby and not a living. I guess I would rather be the guy designing it not fixing it.

Cheers, but now I have to nurse my hangover....:ban:

Well I'm bringing back this thread for a good reason!

If you've read through this rant of mine, then you might remember just how much I've hated my job that I currently have. Well all my hard work might fianlly be paying off.

The guy that I sit next to is planning on leaving the project very soon, and this will open up a slot in a higher pay grade. I am the next one in line for this pay grade, and when he leaves I'm going to buck as hard as I can to get it. I do the same work as him, I;ve been at it for almost a year and I think I deserve it, so I am going to try like hell to get it! If it all comes through I'm looknig at about a 10k raise!!! I couldn't be more excited right now.

I will happily update when the time comes

Mike

Awesome, thats good to hear.

One thing Ive found about IT is they dont pay worth a damn. Its better to be the boss.

I feel your pain but like it's been said. You are only 22. You say that job potential is limited, move somewhere else.

I spent 15 years in construction. Worked from the bottom til I got to the second to last rung on the ladder and left for a $20k paycut to raise a family. Having two working adultsin a household definitely helps to make the "rent".

I let myself get suckered into the "No Degree Necessary" mindset too when I started my carreer life and I too wish I hadn't allowed myself to do that.

Here I am 35 and chasing a degree in Physics. Attending classes whenever I can and getting closer to a degree, 1 credit hour at a time. I figure I will graduate by time I am 92 at the rate I am going. The Maths were NOT my interest in school and I retained very little of the higher maths so now, I am back to taking basic higher maths (Algebra, Geometery, etc...) to work myself up to the Calculus stuff and it's a B!tch.

9 hours a day at work, 6 hours a night babysitting a 2 year old, study til my eyes bleed, and then sleep til it's time to do it all again.

At the least I will begin to understand the Physic involved behind force and distance with respect to infantile projectile spit ups..............

Respectfully disagree.

To OP:
Best of luck. Did anything ever materialize with the college talk?

Yes and no...I did not start fillnig out any of the grant paperwork yet, it's gibberish to me and I've been waiting on a friend of mine to help me fill it out.

As for the student loans, I have to pay off the rest of my "other" debts before I can get them. My credit is BAD!! So I've been working my ass off to get my credit in the grey and then work from there.

If anyone here has filled out school grant paper work, PLEASE PM ME!!!! Any help is needed an appericated!

Thats another bullet I just dodged! My girlfriend of almost 2 years was running a little "late" and we both started to get nervous! But thank god, we know she's not, but as scared as I was, i was also excited..but thats a whole other topic.

Dude apply for the FAFSA as well http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ if you are as poor as you say you are you will get some serious help from the government when it comes to an education. You can do it but as others have said you have to make a decision and do it. I am kind of hypocritical myself as I am trying to change careers myself but believe me within another year I have made the goal to either go back to school and get a different degree or start in a career I really like.

If you hate what you do now, moving up the ladder will only make you hate it more. If you can get more money in the short term, great, but keep your eye discretely on the exit.

The only one who can better your situation is YOU. Your company looks at your from a financial standpoint, not an emotional one. Your company is doing what is in their best interest 24/7, so learn from that mentality. Start putting some thought & effort into making changes that will be best for you. If you want to job hop or go back to school, now is the time! Saying you don't understand the paperwork is a cop out IMO. I am 26 and recently went back to school online for something unrelated to my previous position. I was making good money, but was totally disinterested and frusterated. I decided to go back to school on my time and on the government's dime (temporarily). Quitting my job and taking out student loans is a considerable, but acceptable risk IMO. I am confident that I will be able to pay off the loans because I will make it happen one way or another. Don't allow yourself to have the defeatist mindset that you can't do anything you want to. You're younger than me with no wife or kids. You can do whatever you want! Best of luck...:mug:

Trust me it is. I think I will hate this place a little less if they pay me a little more. But if I don't get the raise, then I am out the door asap. I'm sure I cna find someone in this town to pay me a little more :D

I will be filling out the form when I get home tonight as well, thanks!

I worked full time and went to school full time. I had $15,000 in medical bills, no outside help and was told by doctors the stress of school could kill me...I now make triple my prior salary, enjoy my job and my current job is paying for my masters degree. I worked my a$$ off for 5 years, got crapped on my my dad ($3000 in debt to me, then refused to do his taxes so I couldn't file for student aid so I could run his business), refused student loans, worked full time, literally didn't have money to get gas to get home from school so slept in my car, ate rice every single meal because it was cheaper than ramen for 3 months. And I wouldn't trade it for anything. I earned everything I have.

If you are 22 and healthy stop with the excuses. Sacrifices now will reap awesome rewards later. Yes, this even means spending less on homebrewing and beer. (don't hate me everyone) Yes it means you will have much less free time (now) but a $40,000 job you hate for the rest of you life or a better paying job you enjoy after 4 years of busting you a$$?

Companies try to get away with as little as they can. If you threaten to leave, they'll give you an amount that they think is the least amount they can offer to keep you there. That's just business.

I don't know what field you're in, but I'm in IT and I keep my options open at all times. I make pretty good money now (considering the small town that I live and work in), but I could probably make 50% more if I wanted to commute 45 minutes each way instead of the 10 minutes that I have now.

It's all about what's more important to you. I'd rather drive 10 minutes and be home at 4:30 to spend time with my kids than make 50% more and be home just in time to kiss my kids good night.
