Trying to hone in my equipment for Brew Target/BeerSmith. I currently do 1 gallon batches and want to get my system honed in for this setup and to give me some experience when I can go bigger later on.

Long story short I was given a BBS kit as a gift and have been using their "way" to brew some good AG beers. Basically I use a 5.5 qt stainless pot as my mash tun along with a large fine mesh strainer to sparge. I heat up the sparge water to circulate through the grains 2-3 times allowing the wort to drain as completely as possible before boiling.

How exactly should I measure my dead space for the software? Suppose I use 2 qt to mash and heat up 4 qt of sparge water and end up with about 5 qt at the beginning of my boil, does that mean my "dead space" was about 4 cups?

If you're just pouring through the strainer, I think your dead space would be zero. Your loss is grain absorption.

Ah ok, that makes sense. I just wanted to make sure I was properly accounting for everything. Wasn't sure if that would be the dead space or just loss due to absorption.
