A Mort Subite short of a blind tasting... is it worth it? Never seen it; is it available on shelves stateside?

St Louis gueuze fond tradition and boons Mariage parfait as I mentioned before

I'm just shooting for the basic gueuze from the major lambic brewers and blenders. So I'm doing just Boon Geuze instead of Mariage Parfait. I'm not counting Fond Tradition as lambic either... I gotta cut the bottles off at some point or there is just too much.

But maybe I should throw some levifunk into the mix as a wildcard.

Just checked and they only have sweetened Mort Subite kriek. Sorry :(

Thanks! If anyone else sees a Mort Subite Oude Gueuze collecting dust on a shelf I'd gladly exchange some Wisconsin goodness.

Only in the sense that there was enough research and information to write about it from a cultural perspective. I'm particularly happy with the way we handled the West Flanders issue on there because it was an absolute precursor to the Americans capitalizing on the popularity of the style 30+ years later. I think that in order to really understand lambic culture (and to a certain extend geographic tension surrounding it) starting at our West Flanders page to get an idea of the history and justification is an important step to getting the whole picture. There's even a section in Raymond Buren's Gueze, Faro, et Kriek entitled "Outside the Walls" (translated) which is where he talks about the West Flanders producers which was kind of the inspiration for that section. It wasn't initially intended to be part of the site, and Forgetfu debated long and hard about it.

Anyhow, for the record I don't really think it's lambic but there's a strong-ish case to be made for it from a cultural proximity and historical perspective. Including that section opened up a new avenue of discussion, but don't expect to see an "American Lambic" section any time soon. ;)

Spontenbasil was 28.99 on the shelf in North Carolina when I saw it last weekend, I took a pass. Still haven't personally seen Cuvee Rene Kriek in either NC or SC, really hoping it shows up at some point.

If I had to guess, I'd say no CRK in NC, but maybe SC.

I've seen it on the shelf from $24.99 to $31 in NC. Passed at each price, but I'm not big on basil.

What makes you guess that?

No CR Kriek in the state so far, supposedly MdV is "working on it" which means 2plums4one may very well be correct :\

I have this horrible image in my head of many Cuvee Rene Krieks being drainpoured, because they get purchased by drinkers who typically buy the sweetened Lindemann's **** and don't like how the beer is sour.
I think you're overestimating Lindemann's sweetened drinkers - in the past, I've never seen them stray from "their beer" e.g. framboise drinkers won't even try the kriek and vice versa. And no one will try pomme/peche/cassis

That is one reason it didn't come to the states sooner. Before the boom consumers weren't well-verses enough to differentiate sweetened and non-sweetened.

I'll add when 8 of us did a blind taste test of Tilquin, 3F, 3F ogv, Cantillon, boon mp, some others I forget, boon mp was dead last by a huge margin.

I just can't seem to get on board w that beer. Every time I have it I am underwhelmed, but buy again thinking I am missing something.

Definitely not my favorite, but I like that I can get a 375ml of it for $5-6 when I'm craving some 3F OG and don't have any... and don't want to spend $20-30 on Tilquin. Also pretty easy here to find a 2010 shelf bottle.

This very well may be my other "problem", for the same price I can get 3F, Tilquin or Cantillon.

I've talked to several store owners in NC, and I seem to recall SC getting a slightly better selection of lambic distro than NC. I could be wrong on that though as this stuff changes all the time.

When I was in Belgium last fall, I made a point to try it. It was a lot cheaper than Cantillon, 3F, etc. krieks and also a notch lower in quality, so I guess you are lucky?

Having tried it, I'm as excited about it as I am the regular gueuze. Great, it's cheap and solid, but not something I'll seek out too often.

I had a 2011 mp and 2012 mp kriek recently, meh;(
The wife was rather apathetic towards the boon mp kriek after having had a 2011 3F Kriek.

MP Kriek is wholly underwhelming, at least the bottles I have had have been. I like regular MP for its price and when Im in the mood for something bright and citrusy instead of an aged cobweby cellaresque gueuze. Its the same reason why Ill buy CR.
