Another point is the Euro is so low right now that ordering a box and paying an extra domestic shipping cost is still cheaper than ordering a box a year or two ago when the € was like 40% higher against the dollar.
I hadn't thought about that at all. Really good point that makes the extra shipping seem more reasonable.

I've been doing a lot of ordering due to this situation. Except for Trappist, even though the euro has fallen off significantly their shipping prices remain the same and bottle go up. But I guess it doesn't matter since they are using American dollars. They are killing it on the overcharging shipping costs, not to mention bottle price.

I got two Framboos from trappist world in my cart right now.. $175 each.. should I buy.. ****..

My 07 Schaerbeekse Kriek was not very good. It had a synthetic cork. Didn't I read something about avoiding 3F beers with synthetic cork?

I have also had several and they are excellent. Glad I have more
I've had a bottle of '07 St. Valentijn Cuvee that was well carbonated and very good, albeit not as good as the December bottling of OGV '07 (real cork), but I'm not sure the cork had anything to do with that.

This has been my only interaction with Synth corks on Drie bottles.

BiaB may need to rethink their state list. For whatever reason, I have a box coming to Chicago from Etre that is going through customs at LAX rather than somewhere on the East Coast. WTF?

Yeah one of my friends in Austin, TX says his boxes are coming thru LAX too and are being sent back. Strange things are afoot.

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere, but why are the boxes being returned? Is it not legal to order beer from a foreign country?

Yeah, I'm wondering if I should roll the dice with Montana or not. I'm thinking no. Can't believe Chicago is going through LAX.

It's illegal (and against USPS Policy) to ship beer/alcohol from non-licensed retailers. I don't believe BiaB, Etre, or any of the Belgian sites are licensed retailers in the US. Plus when you buy from these sites you're technically not paying the proper customs. Then there's the whole shipping across different states and how these boxes are skipping all the interstate laws/taxes that apply to alcohol. Basically blame prohibition.

There are really only two legal ways to ship alcohol in the United States. A retailer must be licensed to sell alcohol by a state that permits shipments in and out of that state and must have an alcohol shippers contract with either UPS or FedEx. The US Postal Service does not permit shipments of alcohol. It is illegal for a non-licensed individual to ship alcohol. Additionally there's like 15 states (TX, PA, MA, etc) that its illegal to ship any type of alcohol to.

That's bizarre. I have a BiaB box that was shipped Friday, and according to the BPost tracking, it's headed to NY.
In your case, I hope it's an error in the tracking site?

Makes me wonder what is happening at LAX. Are they scanning packages or are there certain senders such as Biab ect that are flagged? Are any trades (not purchases) with Europeans and guys on the West Coast getting through LAX or are those also getting bounced also? Unfortunately, seems only a matter of time before the other hubs would follow suit with LAX....

I had two boxes (one from Biab, the other from another online retailer) recently come in without incident. The biab box went through JFK and the other was a mystery. I had another box from Beerplanet get kicked back after it went through LAX. It seems like unless you are on the East Coast, there is going to be a possibility of your box going through LAX.
