I brewed my first 2 lagers on Monday. I cooled overnight, racked off the trub and pitched my starters Tuesday around noon. I aerated, by shaking the bucket, for about 5 min. each. I went back to aerate again about 6pm because I wanted to make sure there was plenty of oxygen in the beer. Both beers off gassed tremendously after a few shakes. I stopped immediately thinking that fermentation had started and I might do some damage if I were to continue to aerate after it had started fermentation. Both airlocks were bubbling vigorously when I went to bed around midnight.

I was surprised that fermentation would take off that quickly, especially since I pitched cold, around 50. Did I do any harm by aerating after fermentation started?
