I can pick up a Danby 5.2 cubic ft kegorater fairly cheap. Does anyone use one of these to ferment in? Will they hold a 5 gal keg and a fermenter or is there not enough room? I don't keg yet but eventually want to get there. Is using the same fridge for legging and fermenting a bad idea?

You are going to ferment most standard ales in the low 60s, but would want to keep the serving kegs closer to the low to mid 40s.

There are plenty of people who use them for both, but your serving temp is going to be a slave to your necessary fermentation temps, so I personally would want separate chambers. Serving an amber ale or APA at 63 or something like that doesn't sound good to me.

Let the kegerator be a kegerator. Do a little searching and you can find a similar mini-fridge to ferment in for about $50 on Craigslist.

I was thinking about this as well. I posted in the begginers forum asking about mini friges. Could a mini fridge be used as a fermenter without too much modification? Would it be able to get low enough for an occasional lager?

You can definitely use a mini fridge. I use one as a fermentation chamber. There are a bunch of threads that show you how to bend back the cooling coils and pull off the door panel as well to give you more space. I am not a DIYer and I was able to do it pretty easily. I hooked up a temp controller and I can lager in there as well. You can even add a heating pad with a dual stage controller if you need to keep it warm in the winter.
