yesterday Gigantic released 30 cases of scotch BA Massive aged in Macallan barrels for almost two years, $15/ea - brewery only.

only a few weeks left of 2018 and this is making a strong charge for PNW/Portland beer of the year for me.

also, they still have bombers of 2016 BA Massive ($20/ea) and 500ml of 2017 BA Massive ($15/ea) available to-go at the brewery.

They have bottles of this at Berkeley Bowl West for 17.99 so it is seeing some local distribution.

oh yea that guy is fantastic! i get a couple bottles every year, ever disappoints. had a blind barleywine tasting back in 2013, and that one was at the top for me

In the sweet spot right now IMO. Sweetness has subsided, but oxidation had not set in to any significant degree. Light port barrel, caramel, molasses, the usual, but no yam/ sweet potato that seems to set in around 7 or 8 years. Drink 'em if you got 'em.

Ticked the Cigar City Madeira Barrel-Aged American Barleywine today. Good not great. Was just missing something (maybe a little thin), but I was having trouble putting my finger on it exactly.

Thought I’d cross post this from yesterday’s DDT.

Received a dusty old bottle of Bigfoot from bigstrunso in last year’s Secret Festivus BIF. Opened it last night.

Definitely a unique and special beer experience. Held up remarkably well for a 23 y/o twistoff bottle. No sign of oxidation believe it or not. Just waves of dark fruit, molasses and unlit cigar and a surprisingly firm hop presence remaining.

1995 btw was the year I met my wife. It’s also the year a little beer bar opened here in Hanover called Kclinger’s. It’s long gone now but it was way ahead of its time back then w 40ish beers on draft and hundreds of bottles from around the world. I remember going to a barleywine dinner there which required a designated driver for entry. Bigfoot, Old Foghorn, Old Crustacean, Old Horizontal among others... Can’t remember anything about the food... anyway my girlfriend at the time (now my wife) volunteered to be my DD for the event. That’s probably when I decided she was the one. It was definitely the beginning of a lifelong pattern.

So it's confirmed, you can never get rid of that excessive hop character.

2015 Alpine Great is tasting wonderful. Lots of oak and dark fruit with a little more than a medium sweetness. Definitely sweeter than I remember. Finishes with a slightly hoppy, bitter bite.

Aaron b3 bottled in 2017. Lots of the same characteristics as the Alpine, but a bit more refined. A bit more balance on the barrel character as far as the oaky tannins and booziness goes. Slightly less sweet, and finishes a bit quicker with minimal bitterness and hop character. The malt profile is bright without being too sweet. This is a top barleywine for me, cheers!

Have you tried Peleg from HF? I remember that being quite funky, think it's their old ale with some of their house bugs added.
