I was going to make my first IPA and was going to use a recipe on Beersmith but was wondering about the addition of honey and oak chips in the recipe. Is it best to add the honey during the boil or after? i'm not sure how much honey flavor i would like in an IPA and have read that after the boil impart more honey flavor. Any suggestions on the recipe?

14.8 oz Light Dry Extract (8.0 SRM)
6 lbs 8.5 oz Pale Liquid Extract (8.0 SRM)
2.13 oz Northern Brewer [8.50 %] - Boil 45.0 min
1.00 tsp Irish Moss (Boil 10.0 mins)
1.07 oz Nugget [13.00 %] - Boil 5.0 min
1.0 pkg British Ale Yeast (Wyeast Labs #1098) [124.21 ml]
1 lbs 14.3 oz Honey (1.0 SRM)
1.00 oz Cascade [5.50 %] - Dry Hop 28.0 Days
4.00 oz Oak Chips (Secondary 7.0 days)

Honey is generally added at flame out to get as much honey aroma and flavor as possible. I've never used oak chips so I cant really help you there. Let us know how this beer turns out.

Doesn't really matter when you add the honey, you won't taste it. It will just ferment out, think of it as adding sugar to a Belgian. If you want honey flavor you have to use honey malt. Since honey is a valuable commodity in my house I would add more base grain or for this recipe more light extract instead.

As far as the oak goes, you can't take it out. Taste it from time to time to see when it has imparted enough flavor.

Also the 28 days dry hop....is that after 28 days or the length of time to dry hop? A month is a awful long time to dry hop.

Bottle with honey for aroma...use honey malt if you want the taste. I add honey as well, just to boost ABV, and not enought to even consider making an impact on flavor

I add honey to everything I brew as well (I raise bees and have tons of the stuff), to kick up ABV. I add it at flameout, but would like to try adding at bottling for aroma. I will concur that it adds no honey flavor once it has fermented out.

Sounds good, i'll keep the honey at flame out, going to ditch the oak chips i think, going to do a bit more reading. As for the hops, that was in the recipe but for myself, i was thinking 2 weeks in the secondary.
