Check out The Dresden Files books by Jim Butcher. I'm on book 3 and I'm hooked. It ain't Lord of the Rings, and it ain't Steinbeck... but its a lot of fun.
Ok just watched 2 episodes last night. Its not half bad, though I miss McAnnally's and Mister. His staff being an old hockey stick is kinda lame too...
I haven't read the books but I loved the show. It's right up there with Firefly (well maybe not quite with Firefly) on my "they were really dumb to cancel this show" list. I'll have to check out the books.

(Admittedly I am a huge Firefly fan) I think the bubblegum sci-fi and fantasy is fun, you can't always read something that requires diagrams to understand the geneology of the charachters. I read a lot of both sci-fi and fantasy and every once in a while a good piers-anthony or Star-trek book is just what I need. Too much tolkein, Robert Jordan, and Dune does wierd stuff to my brain. You start thinking some of the stuff just might work because it is so well thought out and plotted.
