Knowledge is what you have 5 seconds after you need it.

Great Foam EXPANDS LIKE CRAZY. Should have known better but I've never used it in such a confined space. I've got the crap everywhere.

If you decide to do this, do a small section at a time, fill it NO MORE THAN 1/3 FULL, wait for it to finish expanding before doing the next section. WEAR GLOVES. I'll be peeling this stuff off my hands for hours.

Do it on a protective plastic sheet.

Also, I wouldn't do this unless I had a lid that was translucent where I could see how far the stuff is reaching.

All the Best,
D. White

There are two different types, one is for large gaps/spaces and expands much more than the other version. You have to be careful with the large gap version, if you try and fill too much you can end up over expanding and distorting the lid. In addition to making a total mess.

Also, if you wait until it dries to clean it up, it comes off easy, when moist at all, fageddaboudit

I got the regular version.

Lid is completely insulated though. Holding it up
to a bright light there are NO pockets.

Heh. I had an identical experience years ago. What a mess.

My $.02 : drill two holes in the lid - one to blow in the stuff, one to allow air to escape. If you have only one hole, the air will exit as you're blowing the insulation in, carrying messy stuff with it.

When I did mine, I drilled holes in each section. It made it easy to get the stuff in all the right places. Then I plugged the holes with these:

Even better than all of this is to cut some pieces of styrofoam the same size and shape as the inside of the mash tun, stack them together, put them in a crockpot liner bag and then right on top of the mash. No headspace = little heat loss.
