Hey folks

N00b here. First attempt at brewing a hard cider. Using store bought apple juice (no preservatives), sanitized everything. Followed a couple of youtube channels on the basics. After a week, i see these white streaks which I dont think is expected. Thoughts? Infection?

TIA

I am fairly new to brewing cider. I use Mott's apple juice. I haven't seen anything in my attemps like you have, although it looks like you have a good amount of headspace. I have filled my FV to within a 1/4" of the top and haven't had any issues. I have one going right now using the Little Big Mouth Bubbler, lots of headspace in that, but no streaks.

It looks like the fermentation is/was going hard and krausen was shot to the top. What yeast are you using? I have used store bought bakers yeast, S-04, S-04, and my current is Voss Kveik.

As others already said, those white streaks are yeast deposits.
They were created when the krausen (foam production) during active fermentation, rose to the top of the jar. The fermentation was probably a bit exuberant, due to higher temperatures.

Totally normal, enjoy your first cider!

Thanks for the confirmation. I am using a simple ale yeast Safale S-04. Probably I overdid it in adding the yeast.

So great to hear! Thank you for the confirmation!

As others stated, looks normal. And remember: NEVER give up on a batch, until you are certain that it's not drinkable. Wait till it's done, then sample. Sometimes, stuff that looks weird is a non-issue, and even some off-flavors can work themselves out over time. I've made several store juice ciders, and a few fermented with a case of rhino farts. After some more bulk-aging and time in bottles, the bad smell was gone.
