John Palmer sites using 1/2 cup of DME for 1 cup of water to make a starter for liquid yeast. Does that mean then that to make a 1/2 gallon starter, one should use 4 cups of DME and 2 qts. of water? That seems excessive and expensive to me. And, similarly, if a 3L starter is recommended for high gravity brews, should these numbers be doubled? It is interesting that for as much talk as there is about starters around here, nobody really mentions this, nor can I find it in any of my voluminous tomes (sorry, I really wanted to say that). I haven't brewed with a starter as yet, but I feel it would be wise to start, based on the pros and cons... thanks for your impending responses!

Go to MrMalty.com and use his calculator and all your questions will be answered :mug:

100 grams / liter water is the easiest way for me. For a 2 qt starter, that's ~200 grams, which is ~2 cups, if I remember right.

I just followed deathbrewers advice and made up a half cup DME into 2 cups of water with WLP400, fermentation took off within about 7 hours from pitching.

I use a pound DME per gallon water. That gives 1.044SG. I usually make 1qt starters for liquid with 4oz of DME and a 1pt starter for Notty with 2oz DME.

When you go to rack to secondary, be ready with another similar type of beer ready to dump right on top of what is left in your fermenter.

I tried that for the first time this weekend and it took off in 30 minutes. Within 3 hours I had to attach a blow tube it was churning so hard.
