I have the following recipe:
17% munich
30% Belgian Pils
15% caramunich
34% smoked
4% flaked Barley

the recipe calls for Hallertau and Saaz hops.

and I'm using Safale S-05 yeast.

just wondering if i can substitute hallertau for East Kent Goldings or Challenger since i already have them/

thoughts?

Sounds alright to me. The Alpha Acid content on EKG and Hallertau are about the same and I like those hops quite a bit. I'm a no hassle kind of brewer, so if you got it and it saves time I say go for it.

when are the hallertau additions? in what quantity?

if just for bittering you can replace with anything but if later in the boil for flavor/aroma you will end up with different results using english hops in place of a noble hop

if you post the hop schedule you can get better feedback

if the recipe calls for saaz at 60m you could add ekg or challenger at bittering and use the saaz for the later addition and prob be closer to the original recipe

the recipe says to add saaz at start of boil and 30 min mark. Hallertau at 45, 55 and 60 min.
