This is my first attempt at home brewing. I've got a honey porter extract kit from Midwest in the primary. Its been in a week today.

Took a hydrometer reading today and it was roughly 1.018. SG was 1.055.

The brew tasted thin, watery, and highly alcoholic. It was slightly carbonated.

I know it's very early but I was kind of disappointed in the flavor, body, mouthfeel.

Is this normal for a brew at this stage? Will it get more robust with age? How long should I let it go in primary before bottling? Im not planning on moving to a secondary.

Thanks for your help in advance, tried searching the forums but couldn't find a whole lot of info on porters.

Maybe the watery taste could be my taste got used to the S. Nevada tropical IPAs from last night?

You're likely to get 1.055 to have a huge mouthfeel, especially extract. Also, yes, you're more than likely tasting a lot of the yeast still in suspension. It's very young.

I had a brown porter that to me tasted watery and then one day (6 months later) it was awesome. Creamy mouthfeel, really chocolatey.

Bottle it after 2 weeks. Condition for 2 weeks, chill for 24 hours and drink it. If you don't care for it it won't hurt to age it. After another week or two, crack another one open. You might be surprised at how much the flavored change over time.

It seems like my beers are always perfect as I'm drinking the last of it. [emoji13]

Two to 10 weeks in the primary fermenter and if you have a stable FG, bottle it and let it sit at room temp for at least 2 weeks, more if you opted for the shorter time in the fermenter. I've done some porters that seemed to be watery even after a 3 week wait in the fermenter and 3 more in bottles but in about 3 months they changed greatly for the better, gaining body and a smooth flavor.
