Fellow brewers,

I stopped by a biergarten in Munich last Fall and had a Hofbrau Hefeweizen. What struck me most besides the flavor was the color: it was a lot closer to orange than I was used to.....does anyone know why?

I've always brewed hefe's with pilsner malt as a base, I'm wondering if they use munich malt for a base, that's the only thing I can think of. I searched the forums and elsewhere online with no great results. I'd like to try to brew something close to the original this Summer. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

I make a white IPA that comes out pretty orange. For 6 gallons I use 10lbs pale 2 row, 5lbs white wheat, and 1.5lbs red wheat. I have no idea what Hofbrau uses, but mine is very similar in color to the image you posted.

I would imagine there's some Munich in there and also maybe a little caramunich. I had this beer recently on tap too and it's tasty. If it was clear, I'm betting it would look less orange and more pale gold to gold; the yeast really gives it a lot of that color as well.

Im guessing Munich Malt

Munich 20L:
Malty-sweet flavor characteristic and adds a orange to deep orange color to the beer.
Does not contribute signficantly to body or head retention.
