I want to brew a simple wheat extract beer tommorow but do not have my typical yeast available. I am not very familiar with yeasts and do not have time to order the usual. My Lhbs has a very limited selection of yeast. They do sell ale yeasts like muntons and coopers general ale yeasts. Are those fine or do I need a certain strain for a wheat beer.

The Munich (by Danstar?) dry yeast is supposed to be a wheat strain. Even a meagerly stocked LHBS might have some of that.

I find myself adding packets of dry yeast (or specialty malts) to any internet order I make. Keeps me out of binds like the one you describe.

Wheat yeasts give distinct flavors to a beer, although not to the extent a hefe yeast would. I don't think Cooper's or Munton's would give you the results you want.
