So i just brewed a Smashing Pumpkin Ale from NB... Says OG should be around 1.54 according to iBrewMaster but my OG turned out to be 1.082 at 70f.. Im not an expert, this is my second brew, but that is way off.

What did i do wrong?? How do you think this will affect my poor beer? Only thing i noticed was my boil was not as vigorous as it was in the past (i brewed on my new induction cooktop this time instead of my electric oven). It brought my temp up faster but it wouldnt boil very hard without the top on.

Thoughts/suggestions for a new brewer???

It was an extract brew. OHHHHHH sorry i know what i did. I took my reading right from my 3 gal boil not the full 5 gal after i topped with water. Phew, thought a 9% brew was a little far fetched.

Is this an extract kit that you had to top off? If so and you have the proper volume ( 5gal ?) Then the OG I s probably correct and your wort is just not fully mixed.

For the record, you don't need or really want a raging boil. A rolling boil where there is surface to bottom exchange, even if gentle, is good to go. Small little occasional bubbles, is not what you want. But you don't want a rumbling cauldron of eruption either.

I saw them in Fresno in 1984, great show. :fro:

If you "follow" the kit directions and use all of the ingredients, you'll never really miss an OG for an extract brew.
