I dry hopped a 4-month-old brett saison today with 1/2 an oz of Nelson and within 20 minutes, it was offgassing to the point that it was blowing through the airlock, like it was at high krausen. This lasted for about 20 minutes. Anybody ever experienced this before?

nucleation. lots of it :)

beer absorbs CO2 during fermentation and depending on how warm it gets could easily hold a good 0.8 volumes of CO2.
That's one third of the way to a fairly typical ale carbonation level...

Cheers!

I just experienced this myself in a Mexican Lager. Fermented at 52*F, warmed up to 55*F over the course of the week, started to raise them temp to diacetyl rest temperature and added the dry hop and it went nuts! Never experienced it before until now. Cool phenomenon though.
