so my 1st attempt at Harvesting a commercial yeast. I had 2 older cans of Heady and thought I would give it a try, (no stir plate) I made a small 1.20 og (about 250ml) starter and took a couple of days but saw a some signs of life/fermentation.

So made a 1.40 og (500ML) starter and had long lag time about 4.5 days but fermentation started but over all still on the weak side.

My newbie question is now what is the best way to move forward to get a enough yeast to pitch a 5 gallon clone of Heady?

Thanks in advance for the help

Buy the production yeast.

that's funny I did this recently as well, I got a fresh can from a buddy who traveled to Vermont though. My 1.020 started was weak but I got a solid ring of yeast at the bottom.

When I made the 1.040 starter, I saw nothing for 1 day, but on the second day it was ripping like crazy.

I just made a 3 gallon batch and pitched and it was going like crazy for the first 2 days. Point is, this yeast should be going strong.

You could try to buy the yeast or try another starter. Are you using a stir plate with agitator?
