ordered golden promise and intended to get 2-row for an IPA. (7 lbs each)

Would up ordering Pearl by mistake (was looking at it for another recipe and added it to the basket, but not the 2-row)

Do not have time to re-order for the weekend, plus the grain is milled, so I want to use it.

Any ideas what I will get out of this? Any recommendations?

Golden Promise Malt - Tasted raw it has a bit more sweetness than Maris Otter which has more a bready richness. Can be amazing in Pale Ales or IPA's where you want a malty base to fuse with the hops.

Pearl Malt - Pearl, a traditional English barley variety known for its slightly bready flavor.

English IPA from either one... I say use it as a base malt for any of your recipes.

you will get a tasty beer if you hop it well. pearl is used in HT. golden promise is tasty too.

Pearl is the "standard" English barley variety currently grown for malting. If you just buy British pale malt it's likely made from Pearl. Golden Promise is a specialty/artisinal barley variety and as mentioned above has some extra sweetness. Either one is going to be fine. The regular stuff is still very good.

regarding droder1's comment -

was planning on this as these are the only hops I have at the moment
0.5 oz Chinook FWH
2.0 oz Cascade @ 5

Hop Stand (30 min @ 165)
1.5 oz Citra
1.0 oz Chinook
1.0 oz Cascade

Dry Hop – 5 days
1.5 oz Citra
1.0 oz Chinook
1.0 oz Cascade

You won't be able to tell the difference between those two malts with those hops. You'll definitely get the benefit of something more exciting than US two row though

thanks everyone. I was hoping it would not be that dramatic as it is basically malted barley like the rest of the base malts. Still, never having used it, I had no idea what to expect.

Golden promise is the base malt in Surly's Furious, which is an outstanding IPA. I use it sometimes in IPAs, and it gives a nice malt backbone without being sweet or cloying. It'll come out great with the hops you have listed!

When I lived in Germany, I used Pearl malt almost exclusively for anything that called for US 2-row because it was easier for me to get English malts. Now that I'm back in the states, I still substitute Pearl malt frequently because I like the result.

followup:

Three days in fermenter.

Wort was heavenly. Will have to wait another month to see what I really have, but this had a fantastic start.

Probably do this 50/50 again with GP and Pearl
