Server: Would you like a coke?
Me: Yes, I'll have a Sprite.
(Although I'd actually say 7-Up)
And I'd ask for a lemonade. And get told off. Happens every time.

Also acceptable in the South, instead of "Coke", is "Co-Cola"
It can get get confusing if you want a different brand of cola-flavored beverage. I.E.: "I'll have me a RC Co-Cola!"
Also, "Orange Coke" (aka: Orange Co-Cola) is probably more popular than the previously mentioned "Grape Coke".
Just sayin.....
Anytime somebody ever asks for a Coke when they mean Sprite, I'm just gonna hand them a bud light lime.

And a Coke.
That may get awkward at Church.

So, you can't see how the one way could cause confusion?

To at least make this beer related, don't people usually get handed a Yuengling if they order a lager in the Northeast?
Better make that a diet grape coke. I'm trying to watch my figure.
Also, I have met very few southerners that drink Pepsi...

Only in Pennsylvania....
What if you actually want a Coca Cola?
Server: What would you like to drink?
Me: A coke.
Server: What kind of Coke?
Me: A coke.

Isn't that an old Abbott and Costello gag?![]()
And...none of this is funny, but really does it matter? Because not much of the supposedly funny **** was funny either.
A Coca-cola (Co-cola)is a Coke brand of cola
Do you want a coke?
Yeah, get me a Co-cola
or
Do yo want a Coke? I have Co-cola and Dr. Pepper.
I'll take a Co-cola.
I've never heard of somebody wanting a Grape Coke or anything like that. It would be more along the lines of "Get me a coke. Grape if they have it. If not get me a Co-cola"
BTW, I didn't grow up here and I don't make the rules, but it is not that hard to grasp and of course, if you ask for a soda, people understand.
Don't really know why this is such a big deal to people...
