Anyone take a look at it yet? I plan on it after the baby goes down for the night. Wondering what the "work load" looks like. I also got an email that link right to the sign in shut and whatnot. Let me know if anyone needs it.

Just finished the introduction with Morvant. Remembered the course this morning and did some digging. Forgot about the course until I was a beer deep and making dinner. Looking forward to getting my learn on this week with you fellas. Should be fun to have conversation here.

Just finished Unit 1, took about an hour to watch the videos. Mostly an introduction to what is going to happen with a few words about carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, etc. There's a self quiz you can take now and then a unit quiz that won't open until the 21st I believe. Doesn't seem too tough so far but of course it's just the intro.

I'm only through a couple of the videos, but it's definitely starting really basic for now. On the other hand, the articles on carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins assume a lot of base knowledge about organic chemistry. So it's a mixed bag so far.

That was my experience too. The discussion of the actual brewing process from a technical standpoint was very, very basic. Some of the articles/discussion of organic chemistry was more advanced (to me, at least who has no background in O-Chem other than an interest in the mashing process). I think as things go on this forum will be a great place for questions to help keep everyone on track.

Ugh, I hope the chemistry portion of the class is better than all the pseudo history in the introductory videos. Also hoping the damn webpage is fixed at some point, trying to get these videos to play is wearing me out.

Yeah watched up to the chemistry video during my lunch break, the chemistry video was a little tough to understand, but excited to see what the rest of the course holds. I think the assumption is we know chemistry but little about beer, and the opposite is the reality.

Watching the intro vids now. For people who have an organic chem/gen chem/brewing process experience and knowledge, it's starting up pretty slowly. Might need to have a beer while watching this.

Late to the game but I'm signed up.

Videos have been ok for me; I'm not having issues with the site being slow.

The chemistry definitely brings me back to college. I was very excited that I remembered some of the terminology used

Has anyone read the materials in addition to the video? I have completed the videos and plan to read through the materials over the next few days.

Yeah, I've done all of both. My lack of familiarity with organic chemistry graphical notation is the main thing holding me back right now...

finally got around to going through lesson 1 and am struggling a bit with that janux website.
a) would be nice for some documentation on how to use and navigate the website.
b) the list of reading materials for section 1 didn't appear for me until after I took the self-assessment and quiz. needless to say I was completely stumped by a couple of the chemistry questions as I have never had a chemistry course and college was over 20 years ago.
c) it would be nice if the graded quiz would give you the correct answers for the questions you got wrong (and for the brewing steps - malting>>packaging - it actually graded it incorrectly...)
d) since when is a boil kettle not a boil kettle? wtf?!

Signed up, immediately took the test. 15/18. Not bad for a desk jockey...I'll take it!

I already know drinking too much is bad for me and couldn't care less why. Thankfully, bombing the quiz won't make a difference.

The syllabus makes it look like the rest of the course might actually be interesting or even useful.

I think the course has been considerably better from Unit 2 onward (though the brewmasters corner segments are rarely interesting and usually rehash the main lectures). Even the one on the health impacts of consuming alcohol -- I found it fascinating to learn more about the specific chemical reactions involved in metabolizing alcohol, and I know have a much clearer sense of the overall process.

I'm definitely going to stick it out. It's really good for a free course.
