As I'm scrubbing up some buckets to dump the latest 11 gallons of wort into, a silly thought entered my mind while cleaning the lids...

"In all the years of reading silly **** on HomeBrewTalk, I have never seen anyone ask about 'food grade' lid grommets, why is that?"

Is it because people don't realize these are the same grommets found in the electrical department of most hardware stores? Has someone already gone the extra mile and researched the composition of the grommets, then sent out a memo to everyone assuring them of the safety of the grommets? Did I miss this memo, and why doesn't it show up in a forum search?

Perhaps someone has asked this question, but then was suddenly distracted by a glistening bit of stainless steel... Ooh, shiny! Wait, what?

I, of course, am being a facetious ass.

But that said, these lid grommets come from a time long long ago when homebrewers had to repurpose EVERYTHING to make their equipment. So, why hasn't one of the over-priced big-box-stores started marketing their "BLACK HOLE 100% food grade silicone grommets" yet? (looking at you Mid-Northern-West-Brewer)

There's some lolcats for thought :D
