I wont be able to brew this until February (currently overseas) but have been tinkering with Beersmith and wanted to create a recipe to make when I get home and have my own. I have been brewing for about 4 years now off and on due to travel with work and am just stepping into the all grain style of brewing. Any tips I can get to make this better would be appreciated, I am looking for a nice well rounded Pale that isnt super heavy on the Hops for the friends I have who dont like IPA but heavy enough for me who enjoys a nice IPA. This is what I came up with.

7.25 lbs Pale Ale Malt
1.5 lbs Crystal 30L
1.5 Lbs Munich Malt

.75 oz Magnum (12%) 60 Min
.25 oz Cascade (5.5%) 20 Min
.25 oz Sterling (7.5%) 20 Min
.25 oz Cascade (5.5%) 0 min

Yeast would be 1056

Batch is 5 gallon

Per Beersmith I am looking at 36.5 IBU and 9.2 SRM I am shooting for around 1.055 OG but am currently unsure of my efficiency since I have yet to use the new set up.

Once again thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing what others have to say.

Looks good!

I might consider going with 1lb of crystal and 2 lb of Munich - at least keep the crystal to no more than 10% of the grain bill.

On the hop side, I would consider moving some of the 20 minute additions to 10 minutes and adding a dry hop. More hop flavor/aroma without adding more bitterness.

Cheers!

I agree with Pappers. You might be a bit high on the crystal. I'd expect it end up pretty sweet with 14% crystal. It's a matter of personal taste. It'll be tasty, regardless!

I would cut your Crystal malt back to a pound and leave Munich as is. Increase base malt if you need to keep OG same as original recipe. I might cut out the 20 min hop additions altogether and move them to 10 min or later. Even bump up the amount slightly. Add a dry hop addition and you're set.

For the Dry Hop addition what would everyone recommend as far as Hops? I assume Cascade?

I adjusted the Recipe so it is as follows now:

7.5 lbs Pale Ale Malt
1 lbs Crystal 30L
2 Lbs Munich Malt

.75 oz Magnum (12%) 60 Min
.5 oz Cascade (5.5%) 10 Min
.5 oz Sterling (7.5%) 10 Min
.5 oz Cascade (5.5%) 0 min

I do pale ales dry and bitter. I would cut the crystal and move your flavor hops down to 10 and double them. aim for BU:GU of .6 on just the bittering addition.

I dont dry hop APAs. So much aroma competes with the malt. I want my APAs yo be flavorful, not aromatic. And flavorful from both the malts and the hops.
