Report from middlebrow bungalow this afternoon:

- Solid crowd at 2:30
- Good beers (had the Nelson Crush and BA Milk Eyed Mender)
- Staff that was overly apologetic on wait times and craziness of it all (it wasn’t that bad), but I appreciate that they care
- Men’s restroom users who lamented the off-centered “MENS” temporary door label — “I can’t get over this” to which other commiserated “yeah...that’s bad”
- a very heavy of concentration of what I imagine Logan square people to be like
- Some guy next to me who might have been a secret reporter / competitor because both bartender and cook had serious discussion as to his take on the pizza after he left

All in all nice place and successful opening day. A ton of respect for having the fortitude to open your own place here. Congrats!

You saw his note about ‘temporary.’ Lotta internal debate about sorta perfect way to say it and not anger like anyone, which is probably impossible (as noted above by some fella gettin bothered about Pete’s very purposefully misaligned men’s room sign which goes along with a fair amount of misaligned hand written **** all over the place.) best thought we had is to list one urial & one toilet on one and two toilets on other, we’ll see. Wish we could’ve had money and space to just do 4 private WC’s and call it a ****** day.

We’re still tweaking and figured **** out with regards to staffing & protocol as Figuring out logistics to make in-house bread, sourdough pizza, brew beer, blend beer, serve beer and do it for 18hrs, 7 days a week is an undertaking I’m not sure has been done before and probably should never be done again.

We’re trying to figure out an elegant solution to this at Publican too. We have 5 bathroom stalls. All have toilets, two have urinals, one is a family bathroom. 3 say Women’s and 2 say Men’s. But they’re private stalls. My suggestion was the same brass font and size to say Whatever, and then small brass icons of a toilet, a urinal etc underneath to denote what’s in there.

That's a counter suggestion i made as well, and it fits with the European vibe at Pub.

My suggestion was the same brass font and size to say Whatever, and then small brass icons of a toilet, a urinal etc underneath to denote what’s in there.

A couple years ago I mocked up some icons for my company’s bathrooms that went along that mindset, but it didn’t end up going anywhere. (We’re not a restaurant or anything BTW, but I just wanted to make some nice signage for when we have outside visitors.)

Best Intentions goes the unisex route these days, even though there is a urinal in one of the bathrooms. I think in the case of Middlebrow, due to the nature of the restrooms being potentially used by more than one person at a time just to leave them as Male and Female. I would be awkward using the urinal and a woman walks in trying to go to the restroom...
