I had about 90 minutes to kill last weekend while waiting for my son to be done with a birthday party at Chuck E Cheese, so I checked out Ike and Oak.
Overall, my opinion of the beers mostly fell in line with what
duckyboycantfly said. The IPA was the clear winner. Pils and Cream Ale also solid. I got a hint of butter on the finish of the Vienna Lager. All of the adjunct laden beers were meh. I didn't even realize the porter and stout weren't just straight up versions until I started drinking them.. They don't list the adjuncts next to the style like most menus, it's buried in the description.
The space is pretty nice for essentially a strip mall brewery. It's fairly big by most brewpub standards. I managed to snag the single open bar seat. The place was packed with a wait for tables while I was there. Service at the bar was good, especially for opening weekend.
I didn't eat, but the food coming out looked good. Definitely interested in coming back to try some food.
While Dan beat me to the initial review, I'm going to throw this one up while I'm assuming he is still recovering from his birthday shenanigans last evening and won't mind
Decided to check out Ike & Oak Brewing this afternoon, and it pretty much fell in line with what
thewimperoo and
duckyboycantfly posted previously. Very nice space that obviously had quite a bit thought put into layout, system, kitchen, etc...
Sampled through most of the lineup, and the IPA was my favorite beer by far. Only things I really didn't like were the blueberry hefweizen and Vienna Lager (same diacetyl that was mentioned before), but I found it very weird that the infusions / adjuncts weren't listed in the beer description. For example, the hefeweizen desciption mentioned that it was purple in color, but didn't mention the bluberries. Same for the porter with peanut butter and cocoa nibs, the pale ale with black tea, and golden ale with mango, ginger, clove.
Ended up sharing the Scotch Deviled Egg, Fries, Cheese Curds and house jerky which were all solid. Still some issues with the kitchen running out of stuff (cheese curds were on, then weren't, then they "found" more of them), and our server started his spiel by announcing how Ike & Oak was superior to other local breweries because they serve their beer from serving tanks like Emmetts Ale House in Downers Grove instead of from kegs... Thankfully
Alum came by our table before my internal eye roll could manifest in any words.
Outside of the apps and pizza menu (both Neapolitan and a Roman foccacia flatbread style) it's a very limited menu which might be offputting to some, but I enjoy as they should be able to knock those items out of the park. Went with the Ike & Oak Pizza which had Soppresseta calabrese, honeycomb, pickled jalapeño, and Fools Gold beer mustard.
I think this place will be very sucessful as a local brewery / restaurant, but will need to stay pretty busy past the initial opening crowds to support the real estate / staffing expenses. Will certainly check it out again in a few months once the beers change over. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.
