Grapefruit Sofie (Paradisi) also.

Original Grapefruit Sofie > Sofie Paradisi

The original was just a 1/6 barrel with tons of fresh grapefruit zest/peel and some flesh added...

On another note, hey middlebrow how do you feel about Solemn Oath opening up across the street from your soon-to-be brewpub?

The annoying thing is that they're following trends even though they don't need to. It's not like variants aren't going to sell out immediately.

I would argue that GI needs to keep up with "special release stout" trends more than just about anybody. All the MORE's of the world need to do is to attend to the wants/needs of their small community. Goose needs to move. *******. units across the country and at what is still considered by many a pretty high price point. What we see in Chicago metro in terms of BCBS fervor is not necessarily what happens nationwide. ****, there's probably still Northwoods on a few shelves.

And they'll never have the cred they once had to compete with the little hype breweries. So why cave?

The majority of the customer base Goose is trying to put BCBS in the hands of doesn't know what a Henna or a Wakefield is. For those who are aware of these boutique-y sugar waters, the BCBS vurrients are what are realistic for them to actually purchase.

And to a larger point, the BCBS stuff is also in effect marketing for the broader Goose brand. Whatever excitement they can stir up with BCBS has reverberations for their other beers. Or I'm sure this factors into their thinking.

are they that close? I thought they bought down milwaukee by irazu. not super concerned, we'll have like 2 hoppy things on the menu and our beer names are usually only a few syllables (har har). it'll be funny to see it play out with the new owen and engine opening soon, then us, then pipeworks. We should do a hellfish type pact to see who survives the longest.

Not to nitpick here but you're arguing opposite things: GI needs to compete with More but most of GI's customers don't know what More is. If the latter is true, the former doesn't need to be. If the former is true, then the latter is false.

I have no doubt a majority of people standing in line for More's latest release are going to be standing in line for BCBS this year because those people love ******* lines. So there's going to be overlap there until something makes BCBS less cool in those people's eyes. But again, Black Friday is when people who have no deeper knowledge of beer do things like wait for Costco to open up to buy a few bottles. That's their main BCBS market right now and they don't give a **** about pastry stouts other than what they have a chance to buy that day. So again: you're not losing the More market and you're not losing your main demographic... why try to appeal to the More people when you're not going to brew something better because yours isn't going to taste as rare?

Your "halo car" idea is one that I've always been dubious of but people who get paid to think about this stuff believe in it so I guess I'll agree with that point. Maybe brewing a few pastry stouts a year gets people to buy 312?

Also remember that a bottle on the shelf is still "sold" according to GI's books. And if you know where I can get a bottle of Northwoods, lemme know because I wanted to try that mess of a beer but didn't get the chance.

nope, i saw the name on the permit in the window of that new building next to Food Smart. i am all for every brewery opening up within walking distance, one it increases my condo's value. two after being in asheville for a couple weeks it's so nice being able to hop to and from multiple spots without much effort...

ohhh thats across the street....just talked to the squad that knows more than the cube jockey...rumor has it, its like a bottleshop or outpost or bar. no confirmation or knowledge of making beer on premise. either way, i think win win. if folks come in from naperville or burbs and see us across the street they may be intrigued. or conversely, some salty dog wants his hoppy beers and tells me to shove brett up my wahoo, he can head across the street for 10 confusingly named IPA's. fun quiz time....one of these is NOT a solemn oath beer, dont google...

It's gotta be Goth Syrup.... right?

What would be the purpose of that? If they were in fact fake, what positive benefit does GI get from falling well below expectations they themselves have created?

Below expectations in some people's opinion, but not everyone's. I assume the false labels create buzz/hype and confusion regarding what will actually be released. Every year, fans know what's being released in advance thanks to TTB label approval process, but if they continue putting out false labels no one will be able to distinguish what will be released and what won't. #fakebcsnews Take it all with a grain of salt, that's all.

People want to drink Solemn Oath beer?

Snaggletooth is a fantastic IPA, and they matched Publican's contribution to the Youth Center for Immgrant Children's Rights dollar-for-dollar for each one sold last month for our fundraiser.

Also Lü is fantastic.

I wasn’t slighting them, I’ve enjoyed a fair amount of their beers. Their names sorta drive me crazy though.

Also the fake one was posers leave the hall...that’s a manowar song referenced in heavy metal parking lot which I think is a SO beer.

Just because someone is a 'good' person(s) and donates 1%-100% of their profit$ does not make them a brewery that is immune to someone coming in and saying what many/few(?) people were thinking when reading about their new location, which is- people buy Solemn Oath beer?

Snaggletooth is fine, have not had more than maybe another 1 or 2 beers from them that has ever made me think, huh, I need to pick up whatever new weirdly named beer I see on the shelves from these guys the next time I see it.

(Also before you start doing your vav thing and start rifling off all the beers that I've never heard of that are above average for the style or start talking about how I misread your comment let me save you the time real quick - your comment came off to me as if you were stating 'hey, these are good guys and gals doing the right thing for <insert thing vav likes to support here> so maybe lay off a bit on implying they kind of suck'. This is a fine and perfectly valid opinion even if this was not your intent for said comment but their beer when seen together and judging against every single other option on shelves or on tap across Chicagoland is still very much meh.) If you can go ahead and show me where I’ve claimed they’re above criticism, defended their naming conventions or their mediocre offerings, that’d be great. Show your work too, cuz it looks like you’re arguing points I’m not making.

You can't say this very Vav comment that was telegraphed a mile away. I've already defended this position in the latter third of my comment. Try again.

For clarity, your comment put people on the defensive so perhaps your stating that they have mediocre offerings cleared up the ambiguity. The first comment though did appear to put folks on the defensive.

See exhibit A:
Comment: Their beer is being bought by people?
Vav: Snaggletooth is good plus this other beer Lansman has never heard of also they raise money for this thing I like.

One can see my interpretation above, but coupled with your last comment I can now see the other side which is apparently your intent which was more along the lines of 'yeah they're not great but these things from them are noteworthy'.

So you can’t or won’t? Cool. Calling me a ticker in so many words isn’t really helping your case either. I can think of maybe 6 beers I’ve had from SO, the 2 most remarkable I’ve mentioned. This isn’t that hard, someone asked why a person would drink their beer, I answered it.

Thanks for playing though Kev, always a pleasure.
