When I start my brewery and make billions of dollars (because that's how it works right?), my Double Barrel Coffee Banana Stout will be called LINES! SO MANY ******* LINES!

In fact, i'm announcing its release right now so you guys better get lined up.

I wish Chicago breweries had the self confidence that Toppling Goliath has. They make great beer. It's ready when it is ready. Then they sell it to whoever shows up to buy it. What a novel concept.

or (from what i've heard) keeping the bottle count on their hyper-limited releases artificially low and trading "out of numbering" bottles themselves...

All 100% truth.

You can do that when.. ya know.... you're in a town with like 2000 people and surrounded by other towns 50k plus for miles and miles.

This is highly debatable after the last batch of Sue I had.

Who are we talking about here? I'm assuming Penrose, because who else has released anything hyped recently besides Goose. And when you say "traded" you actually mean recieved beer in exchange? Please name name. That's some ****** behavior.

Yeah their bottles vary wildly. I've had a decent amount of fresh Sue bottles and would say only half were consistently great. With a couple that tasted like cantaloupe syrup...in a bad way.
I'll still continue to buy when I see them though.

Anyone go to Dryhop and try the new Motor Row beers yet? I'm curious about them because they at least have someone experienced in the industry at the helm versus the majority of new spots opening.

Anyone could do it. Population doesn't matter. Just put beer out to sell. You don't need 2 weeks notice, a special day, a special time, tickets, etc.

Side Project is another example and St Louis is fairly large. Most of their releases are offered for sale on Wed/Thursday for locals even if they're having an official release day on a Saturday.

The main point being that so many breweries here and across the country thrive on these limited releases that they act like they dislike. They want to get off on it.

Right.

You know the quantity of "beer nerds" in the Chicago metro area, right? You're familiar that St Louis doesn't have anywhere close to the same "beer nerd" per capita rate that we have, right? You are aware that Firestone Walker 18 sold out in stores in under 30 minutes, yes?

Word spreads like a wildfire here. If a silent release happened, the place would be mobbed within 30 minutes. If they did a silent release, they also would most likely be unprepared for the inpending traffic-leading to an even shittier experience.

C'mon now.

They may dislike the dipshit element it brings in, but they love that sweet cash. Hence why Huna day is back on after being cancelled. They know it'll probably be another mess, but they can't resist.

Toppling Goliath.

just to clarify with absolution, yes i was talking about toppling goliath. i have no personal experience trading with any tg employees, i just know things i've read. i have heard absolutely no shady things about penrose (and enjoy their beer).

When you're small(er) and don't have whale-y laurels--unlike Topping, Side Project--your recourse is to drum up hype, announce a bottle release. In a city overrun with options, can you blame a brewery for doing so? Doesn't justify mediocre liquid, but you can't knock someone for attempting to elevate the experience and raise their hand a little higher than the rest. If the beer is bad, the consumer usually bears it out.

Your line of reasoning is akin to telling a dweeb to pull trim like Casanova. Intentions: good. Probability: laughable.

Anybody have any insight or preference on local beercades? Bachelor party afternoon festivities for a buddy sound like they're starting at either lakeview HQ or wicker park emporium. Figured I'd ask around.

go to logan arcade. play shitloads of killer queen. thank me later. edit: if you haven't played it yet, it's a riot. it's kind of like a 5 on 5 joust crossed with starcraft. hard to explain, just play it.

lakeview hq and wicker emporium, and logan arcade have lots of upright, traditional video games and draft beer. the logan emporium has more table type games like air hockey, foosball, pool, etc. logan emporium doesn't have draft beer.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that the TG guys trade their own beer. Usually for lambics/american wilds.

Yeah, I totally misread the thread. My bad and no offense meant to Penrose.

Headquarters is my preference. Can get packed on a Saturday night while school is in. I didn't like Logan Arcade. A quarter per person only buys you a quarter on NBA Jam. Srs.

Killer Queen had a stupid line.

Is trading your own beer a bad thing though? I'd do the same if I were them. Would way rather trade for something I can't otherwise get than get another $10-20 for one more bottle sale. It's not like all breweries don't hold back plenty for events, future releases, personal consumption, etc. Maybe I'm in the minority here though.

EDIT: also don't see this as much different than breweries that are also distributors and keep enty of the good stuff for their own events, bars, etc. If anything, would think what TG allegedly does is better since they're holding back their own beer, which they can of course do whatever they want with.

If I could obtain whales for what essentially is my larger scale homebrew I'd do it without question.
