this is obviously hotly debated but ... i don't think headspace matters so much in primary ... think of all the CO2 you're pushing out, the percentage of oxygen is significantly lowered due to displacement.
same reason blow outs don't cause infection ... you are so actively purging out CO2 that you flush away a majority (obviously not all) of the oxygen.
Both good points. I read thru lots of HBT threads and any articles I could find before deciding to try the larger fermenter. I've brewed 10 batches using this fermenter with no problems. I really dislike the idea of a blow-off tube because it gets really gunky and is hard to clean. For a couple of years, I used a 6.5 gallon bucket, but didn't seal the lid for the first five days - just set a 1 - 2 pound weight on the lid. Both of these methods worked for me.
