I've been ordered all my supplies from Austin Homebrew so far. I was looking for a new kit today. AHS offers extract, mini mash, and all grain kits. As far as I can tell, the mini mash gives you less extract with more grains to steep.

Is that the only real difference between extract and mini mash? If so, what is the real advantage to using mini mash kits?

There are a ton of threads on this topic floating around. A quick search should answer your question in detail.

A one sentence answer would be: Partial mashing and steeping grains are completely different processes biochemically. In a PM you convert base malt starches to sugar via enzyme activity, with steeping grains you just leach out the sugars in caramel malts.
