Hi,

any good european subtitutes for neipa hops like citra, simcoe, eldorado, idaho7, amarillo etc??

I’ve found hull melon, hallertau callista, solero but haven’t try them yet.

Any experience of those or other good ones?

Thanks!

I like Hull Melon a lot. It really does bring the melon. A little more off the beaten path but very good is Ariana.

You didn’t mention Mandarina Bavaria, but that’s the one I don’t like at all. Definitely not a substitute for Amarillo, etc.

Some of the newer british hops are quite fruity but I don't know how they will do in a neipa. I made a golden ale with harlequin and it was really nice.

Oh, good point. Harlequin is really nice indeed. I’ve used it successfully (alone and with Bru-1) in bitter IPA styles.

Yeah totally forgot mandarina bavaria but I haven’t tried that one either.

Depending on your definition of "European", you might want to check out some of the newer English varieties. Haven't tried any myself tbh.

I have yet to test any of these but some interesting ones I found that could match the NEIPA tropical/citrusy or generally fruity profile are: Mistral, Yellow Sub, Archer, Styrian Wolf, Styrian Cardinal, Styrian Dragon and Styrian Fox.
In addition to those there are also these that have already been mentioned: Solero, Huell Melon, Mandarina Bavaria, Harlequin, Ariana and Callista.
Other than those there is also Styrian Kolibri that doesn't neatly match the profile but is said to have a dank, cannabis like aroma that is present in some of the more typical NEIPA hops.
Please understand that all of these are suggested based on data I found online and not personal experience.
I have some of these at home but I have yet to brew anything with them. Also I am more interested in brewing a dry hopped hydromel rather than beer so even if I did something with them it wouldn't be directly applicable.

Great thanks! A lot of new ones there. Have to seek more information about these. I did order huell melon, ariana and callista so let’s see how they’ll work in NEIPA. I’ll let u guys know.

Harlequin and Godiva would fit the bill perfectly. There are possibly others, but I haven't tried them yet.

I'll try Huell Melon with Triskel (and possibly some Simcoe, will decide on brewday after sniffing the bags :D ) on sunday when I'll make a NEIPA-ish session beer - around 3.5%, lots of wheat, oats and hops. Not overhopped like a NEIPA, but similar in spirit, I guess.

I wasn't too impressed with melon and triskel is a lovely hop, but in the Alsace tradition. Makes great lagers and pale Ales, but it's not on your face by any means. Elixir, another French hop, is supposed to be very interesting but I haven't tried it yet. French brewers tend to be quite nationalistic over their hops and Ninkasi near Lyon brew their interprations of American styles. They're nothing like. Drinkable beer, but nothing like.

Hi,

I would recommend these weblinks on hops. I found both to be very useful in determining hop usage.

Good to know, thanks! I intend Triskel to be more of a supporting hop here... And the results of brulosophy's episode of "Hop Chronicles" on Huell Melon seemed promising.

My totally unfounded expectation is that all of these new German varieties are just late attempts of German hop growers to get a slice of the "craft beer" aka IPA business. If I lived in the US - or brewed a lot of IPAs - I'd get the real deal instead of the spin-off.

So, yeah, maybe I'll rely on Simcoe to save the day :D

That would be a shame since you can always go back to Simcoe as I always go back to Cascade. Just had a Ninkasi French IPA hopped with Aramis and Mistral. Thoroughly enjoyed it, but it's not an APA and I doubt whether you could get even close to an NEIPA. On the other hand, Godiva, Harlequin Olicana will get you somewhere in the ball park.
Harlequin on it's own is just too grapefruit and I'd mix it with one of the others, but NEIPA isn't my kind of beer anyway/

Huell Melon is great in eg a modern twist Kolsch, but probably underwhelming in an APA/IPA.

Interested to see if OP ends up brewing an all EU neipa to hear the results though.

Just a word of caution for my fellow Europeans (after all, why else would you care about European hops?) looking at this thread:
If happen to live in an EU-country, then ordering hops from the UK is rather cumbersome due to customs.

As long as you order from a store within the EU, this is not a problem, but if you order from a UK-based shop, you can only buy at most 500g, you will be asked to fill out weird forms, your package will be stuck at customs for a while (which is particularly great if you also ordered some liquid yeast), etc. Fun fun fun.

I live in the Czech Republic. When I first started brewing some ingredients were hard to source but now days almost everything (at least main stream) is available within this country alone. With Cz being a small market in general I'd have to believe that you can find your ingredients in the EU country that you are in.

I order my specialist hops and yeasts here: Home Brew Store | United Kingdom | Crossmyloof Brew
Never had a problem with customs. Never filled in a weird form- that's their job. Postage is cheap, but that's reflected in the slightly higher price of the hops. They stock varieties I havne't been able to find esewhere. Dried yeasts are very reasonable and they discount heavily if you buy 10 packets. Check them out.

I live in France.

I've done a fair few American style IPAs (both hazy and non hazy), as well as a few other styles, using British and other European hops.

I've quite enjoyed Olicana and Jester (both available in T45 form too) as part of an English hopped DIPA blend, alongside CF185. More generally the Charles Faram experimental hops can offer some really interesting flavours (I'm also a big fan of Opus/CF182 albeit more for things like Saisons).

Mandarina Bavaria is a great NEIPA hop, my best ever example featured that heavily. You can now get it in BBC form too, and the 2021 harvest stuff I have is REALLY high AA- like 16.7%! I'm in the process of brewing a Tripel with it right now.

UK Target plays very well in an IPA though my preference is to have it with something more citrus/tropical. Comet is also very good if you're going grapefruit style citrus.

A general observation is that, whilst most of these European hops can definitely carry those NEIPA citrus and tropical fruit flavours they for the most part also still carry their "noble" or "British" backbone, so don't go in expecting a BRU-1 style juice bomb with very little else as they'll almost always have floral, herbal or earthy notes too.

For NEIPA hotside whirlpool hops the best bang for the buck is Brewers Gold, it has the most Geraniol out of any hop (yeast converts to citronellol = citrusy), its grown in France by Charles Faram and is only £3.95 per 100g from Crossmyloof.

For dry hop I like to use a fresh bag of whatever has the most powerful aroma.
