I've recently (well four batches ago now) added two Kimax Erlenmeyer flasks into my brew gear to help me with starter production.

And now I have finally have to ask this probably very simple solution question...

HOW THE HELL DO YOU GET THE DME IN THERE?

I've tried funnels, bendable cutting boards, paper folded in half and everything has the DME gum up from the steam coming out of the top of the flask.
It's insane...I've actually considered fashioning some sort of dissolvable capsule and drop it in that way.

But there HAS to be a better way than that....

There is a better way.

Add your DME through a funnel and then add the water to bring it up to the desired level.

For example, I made a 1L starter today and wanted an OG of 1.040, so I weighed out 100 grams of DME on my scale in a measuring cup, stuck my funnel in the mouth of my ehlenmeyer flask, poured in the DME, added water to bring to 1L, added a 1/4 tsp of yeast nutrient and shook/stirred it up then placed on heat to bring to 15 minute boil.

NO gunkie mess.

I also used a drop of fermcap-s. One drop eliminates the chance of a boil over during hot break.

...sometimes I hate when my brain doesn't come up with the obvious thought

Add DME THEN boil....BRILLIANT!

make sure the water is hot before you add the DME cuz it will lump up and you're gunna have a hard time getting it all disolved even when it's boiling.

I disagree with this. I have found that LME dissolves better in hot water and DME dissolves better in cold water. YMMV

yeah, I disagree too - I always add the DME, then the water, then put it on the stovetop. By the time it's boiling everything's been dissolved and mixed. Super easy.

I dunno. I had a hard time getting the lumps out when I added DME to cold water and brought it to boil. I had to shake it like crazy.
