Relevent cuase were tied in pts with philly, 1 behind Boston, less games played, league leading goal scorer, solid goaltending, and in the winter classic. Oh yeah, and that whole original 6 thing......
And like Toronto, and more like Montreal, haven't done anything at all in the playoffs in almost 20 years, never do anything with those league leading scorers and elite goaltenders, and generally underperform when it comes to their salary number and star player roster.
Original Six status doesn't give you a free pass to remain relevant after years of continual mismanagement, overspending on players past their prime, and underachieving.
The Rangers will always have a fan base simply due to the metropolitan area they're located in. There are enough dumb people out of the tens of millions to watch a team that doesn't really go anywhere and does more to frustrate fans than win. I'm not saying you're dumb, just that it has to be frustrating to see your team continually not get passed the first round of the playoffs when they make it.
By all means, the Flyers haven't won the Cup since the 70s and I went through watching Bobby Clarke overpay/trade for decrepit former talent, but they still managed to get to the Finals, and do well enough to make the playoffs for something like 16 straight years. But that doesn't really mean anything other than frustrated fans and no parades.
The Rangers, since 1926, have 4 Cups, 1 conference championship, 2 President's trophies, and 5 division titles, in 85 years. Only one Cup since 1940...
The Flyers, since 1967, have 2 Cups, 8 Conference titles, and won the division 16 times, in 44 years.
I love the Rangers/Flyers games. I just find it comical when fans think a couple wins over a team who has mixed reviews on being a Cup contender or in a rebuilding status means the Cup ideas are out the window. The Flyers have started off well, but I don't expect them to win the Cup this year, I'd be surprised, especially considering the injuries they're dealing with.
