I'm trying my first attempt at a lager now that I have a house with a basement to ferment. I have all the ingredients for my recipe except the yeast. My LHBS apparently doesn't carry lager yeast :confused:. So I'm stuck mail ordering yeast for this batch. I'm going to be using dry yeast since I can get cheaper shipping (~$2-3) than liquid options.

Does anyone have experience or suggestions for dry lager yeast for a Munich dunkel? I was thinking either Saflager S-189 or Mangrove Jack M76.

Thanks! It's not strictly a HBS. It's a craft tap room with a small room dedicated as their HBS. Grain selection is good, hops and equipment are okay, but yeast selection was pretty poor. They didn't seem keen on ordering in on their next order either.

We had a dedicated LHBS store but they had trouble getting the local club behind them. They closed this may :(
 

I'm really trying to create a recipe that lets the malt come forward. Does 34/70 do well at that?

I was leaning towards the other two because I'd found descriptions of the yeast as accentuating the malt character. Only description I can find of 34/70 is that it is a famous yeast strain.

I'd say it's pretty well balanced.
I've brewed 2 Helles lagers & a marzen with it & the pilsner & Vienna malt definitely come through, just not in your face.

For $2-3 I would get the yeast you want.

I won't skimp on ingredients when I'm spending so much time and energy brewing.

If it helps to justify the cost harvest some yeast and brew a couple batches with it.
 
But if you have to mail order your yeast, dry yeast definitely has its perks due to its ability to better withstand temp fluctuations
