Due to my roommate being a horrible slob and me having fumes of alcohol everywhere, my place is now infested with fruit flies. Does anyone have any tried and true methods to catch and destroy the little buggers? I'm afraid to rack anything for fear of a massive acetobacter infection.

i have heard vinager. let me look though.

welp that wasnt it but they do have traps yu can buy or yuo can home brew traps. search fruit fly control methods.

for your fruit fly problem mix apple cider vinegar with water about 50-50 then add some dish soap. Let the cup sit out in the kitchen and prepare to be amazed.

I also find if I leave out some wine or juice in a glass, they will swarm to it and you have a little lake of bodies.

+1 for apple vinegar. Put some in a glass and roll up a triangular piece of paper into a cone with a small hole at the bottom. Stick the paper in the glass and the flies will swarm into it.

Or you could clean your house.... but I suppose that would be to simplistic of a solution.

Give you house a thorough cleaning with ammonia and you will not have problems.

I have one helluva clean house and yet still get fruit flies every year. :)

Seven posts to the comedy 'clean your house derr' solution. Yea I do that. In fact I'm the only one that ever does. My roommate seems to think refrigeration is the work of the devil and will frequently leave any kind of food out on the counters at all times, especially fruit. He likes to use the garbage disposal as a compost bin instead of throwing stuff away like a normal person.

Plus there's the fact that I have between 6 to 8 fermenters going in here, and fruit flies can actually survive off the fumes of alcohol. I thought they were just living off my empty bottles and so I started being better about cleaning them out, but to no avail.

I've now got four glasses of Apple Cider Sarlacc Pits Of Death waiting in various places of the apartment. One near the fermenters in the otherwise unused dining room. Another in the kitchen. One in my room. One in the bathroom. And now we sit back.... and wait..... oh yes..... oh yes....

My mom always used to leave 1/4" of red wine in a bottle on the windowsill in the kitchen. It did the trick every time.

I tried that a few times but my roommate always drinks it when it starts to work.:drunk:

I just use a can of hairspray and a lighter and my very bestest warcry.:fro:

j/k - that little cocktail of death should do the trick.

Welp, time to check the traps today. Doo do doo.....

Hmm..... well, what's this?

Yea, that's what I'm talkin about! It's the Bataan Death March for those silly little creatures. The jar was in my room, the square was in the bathroom. Caught about 5 or 6 in each. However in the kitchen and dining room....

There's dozens! I dunno why one turned cloudy though. Oh well, it's working, and I'm going to be leaving them out for awhile.

Those might be the kind of flies that live on the decaying matter of houseplants. If they have infested your plants you will NEVER get rid of them. The only solution is to throw out all your houseplants and make sure your sinks are stopped up because they will breed in drains that are not used regularly.

Did you recently bring houseplants in the house? Perhaps a new plant?

No, but my roommate brings in all kinds organic fruit, eats half, then leaves it on the counter. It's sooo gross. The only houseplants we have is a few bamboo shoots that are indestructible.
