Hi. I am curious as to why this lager yeast from wyeast is a darker color. It was properly stored and is less than a month old. It smells fine but the color appears dark. I am making a starter. Thanks

The pic is a little I squeezed out of the package.

Not sure why it is darker, that strain just might be. If you're making a starter, you shouldn't worry really. Many of the yeast starter calculators estimate cell viability based on production date. You could input a range of dates and find what average starter size is recommended for your OG, based on your estimate of viability.

It's a little dark but it doesn't really look TOO far off, just put it in a starter and make sure it's viable.
