I received an e-mail from Jason this morning.

The prices and terms that DurangoHomeBrewMafia and I laid out have changed slightly.

The two wheats are a flat $0.75 a lb for a 50 lb bag. The only break would come if we order over 3000 lbs of wheat. I don't think that is going to happen.

Pale and Pils are the same breaks. We should have no problem getting to the 1,000 lb price of $0.65 lb.

There will be no sales tax charged.

We would have to get to a total of 2000 lbs to get free shipping. Below that, we will be charged a $50.00 delivery fee.

There is still no charge for milled grain. Jason wants an absolute minimum lead time of three days to put the order together. April 27th is a Tuesday. I would like to have all orders in and confirmed by April 23 the Friday before. I'll put together another list with corrected pricing.

Please keep posting your tentative orders in this thread. In Mid-April, I will contact you to verify your order. I would like to get cell phone numbers of everyone and e-mail address to get back to you to confirm. We do wish to complete this transaction in cash and we would like you to be present to pick up your grains. If that is not possible, please make contact with someone near you to hand over the cash and pick up the grains for you.

Please let me know if any of you have any questions. We want this to go as smoothly as the last group buy.

Thanks,
Wayne

Just for clarification, so reaching more than 1,000 lbs of Pils and Pale combined gets us the price break for both grains?

IE, we don't need 1,000 lbs of Pils to get the price break on it.

Thanks for taking the lead on this Wayne1!

Mike,

That is my understanding of the mail I received. I did shoot back an inquiry to Jason to clarify the matter.

Depending on the answer, I may or may not change the pricing I just posted. I also asked about the uses for the hulless barley.

Did anyone get milled grain last time? I'd be interested depending on how long it can be stored. I'm brewing about every other weekend (5 gallon batches) so it would probably take me ~2 months to go through a sack.
I don't think the wife would approve of a mill purchase just yet so I won't be able to mill it myself.

What LHBS do you use? You may want to see if they will let you use their mill, you'll still be buying hops, yeast, and specialty grains from them.

I use Rocky Moutain Brewery (myhomebrew.com) and they said they don't mind me using their mill.

You should be able to store milled grain in a sealed container for a few weeks. Perhaps as long as a 6-8 weeks. Others on this site might be able to give you better information. I have always used whole grain and milled the day I was using it.

Maybe you can check out the homebrew club that meets at the Rockyard Brewery in Castle Rock. There may be a brewer that lives near by you that has a mill that you can use.

I am in the SW Denver suburbs, near Wadsworth and Ken Caryl. If anyone who lives nearby wishes to mill grain, they are welcome to use my mill. I have a decent two roller mill with a 1/2" drill for power. I can mill 10-12 lbs in 5-7 minutes. I am usually available Friday afternoon/evenings and weekends.

I received official word that the Pale and Pilsner malt can be combined for price breaks. At 1,000 lbs., both malts will be $0.65 a pound. We are at 950 lbs. confirmed. There may be additional requests, but they are not certain.

We need to get to 2,000 lbs for no delivery charge.

Wheat malts are priced at $0.75 a pound no matter what quantity.

The hulless barley malts are said to be used for flavor, mouthfeel and texture.

Thank you, Dave.

We are now officially over 1,000 lbs. :mug:
If anyone would like to increase their order, please post here, for now.

I will be contacting everyone by PM in about a month to confirm the orders.

Tell your fellow Front Range brewers. Let's see if we can get this up to 2,000 lbs for free shipping. 3,000 will get us another price break to $0.49 lb.

I'm in for...

3 bags of Pilsner
3 bags of Pale
1 bag of Red Wheat

I may add more once I hear back from 1 more guy I brew with

This is probably a dumb question, but I am new to all grain so I will ask anyway.

Are pilsner grains only used for making lagers? If it is not just for lagers what type of beers can you make with a pilsner grain?

Thanks!

In the process of going to the AG side myself!
:mug:

I have a Cream Ale recipe my friends like (they like the extract version, at least!) that uses 6.0# Pils/5G. Plus, I'm going to try an ale Munich that I came across the other day with 5#/5G, using WLP029.

Pilsner Malt is a generic term for a malted barley that is VERY light in color.

Typically 1-1.5L

Pale Malt is usually a little bit darker 2-3L

Both are fully modified these days, so no step mashing is needed. You might have to boil a bit longer when using the Pils.

I will ask Jason for the current malt analysis of both so everyone can compare

For now, here is the analysis of the last batch of Pale Malt.

I was wondering the same thing. I don't have the ingredients that typically go into each style memorized yet, so these are just some specific ones I've found on this site:

Bee Cave Brewery Bavarian Hefeweizen
BierMuncher's OktoberFAST Ale
Pacman Dunkel

When I was thinking of getting some Pils (I'm not), I was primarily thinking of Lagers.

Hello all,

Please please put me down for 2 sacks of pale. I've been looking for getting some bulk grain economically in the Denver region and have quite a few friends that are interested as well. I sent out an email to some friends and I bet I could get 4-8 or more additional sacks on the order from them. I'll prod them along and try and get you a definitive quanity as soon as possible next week. Thanks, Lee

Can I add 50 lbs of pale to my order? I figure the worst that will happen is I'll have to brew more. :)

Done.

That puts us at 2,000 LBS total weight. There will be no delivery charge :ban:

Now all we need is another 1200 lbs of pale or pilsner malt orders and the price will drop to $0.49 a pound.
