Would affixing vinyl tubing to one of those fireplace stoker thingies (billow?) work well as an aerator ?

It would work great if you like infected beer. I dont think you would be able to filter that incoming air well enough for bacteria to not get in let alone the bacteria that is already in the bellows.

That is precisely what I was thinking, but I was curious if any of the MacGyvers here had figured out a way to filter it.

Not that I would do this but you could attach a tube at the output with a sanitary filter available at LHBS or many online supply stores. I use those on my CO2 tank lines and many use them on aquarium pump set ups.
