Colorado malting company offers a cottonwood smoked malt: https://coloradomaltingcompany.com/our-catalog

I’ve called and the smallest quantity they’ll sell at a go is a whole 55-lb bag. I love me some smoky beers but that’s a whole lot to buy all at once not knowing if I’ll like it.

So I’m wondering if any of you all have tried it. What’s the smoke flavor like? How does it compare to beechwood smoked or cherrywood smoked or oak smoked malt? Any other general thoughts?

Thanks for the tip! I can’t find anyone selling this at retail, but let me know if you do.

I regularly buy 10-pound bags of various smoked malts, but 55 seems like an awful lot.

In my experience, burning cottonwood does not smell good.
I can't imagine wanting to smoke anything with it.
Might be a different species in Colorado vs Ohio where I am, but I'd be wary of buying a large amount untested.
