I bought a corny keg from a homebrew store and when I filled it with hot water to clean, it had almost a roundup-y smell. I rinsed it with hot water another few times and star saned it. While the star San was in I didn't smell anything.

My question is: is this leg safe to use? Wanted to ensure I'm not serving chemicals to guests. Where do most places get their kegs?

Thanks

I've gotten kegs from home brew stores, you should be okay. I would wash it well and replace the orings. You should be good to go.

i would soak it in oxyclean free for a while, with hot water, then rinse the heck out of it, should be good to go then

As everyone else said...

Tear it down. Soak everything in oxyclean free, and replace all gaskets. If the poppets smell funny, replace them too. Poppets are not cheap, btw.

Or just bring it back to the store and tell them it stinks like a hobo's shoe.

Your choice. I'd go the "hobo shoe" route, 'cus I'm lazy...

Thanks all! I should have read this first, but I called the HBS back and the owner said it was from a home brewer that got out of the hobby, so I went ahead and filled it out with my Oktoberfest I just made.

Hopefully it turns out ok!
