Brewed my second all grain batch today. The grain bill was 5# wheat, 4# two row and 1# honey malt. Mashed at 151-152 for 60min. Boiled for 60min with the addition of 1oz Liberty and .5oz german hallertau at 60min.

My concern was that there was a lot of what looked like protein in the boil. As strange is this might sound it almost resembled egg-drop soup. My wort was clear before I boiled. Not sure if this is an effect of using so much wheat grain or if i serious messed something up.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

I've had the same experience. It settles out after fermentation. I'm interested in what others say though. I've only done 4 all grain brews. I use Irish moss or whirlfloc tablets. I don't really worry if if that protein/moss/hop trub goes into my fermenter. My beers are coming out good to me, so at this point it may not be perfect but I'm sure you will have good beer.

Sounds good to me. A lot of that particulate matter will settle in the primary. You will be surprised after you rack it and then bottle. Gravity is your friend when reducing suspended solids.

I usually get that mote with wheat beers. I'm assuming its proteins from the hot break, as wheat has more protein than barley as I understand.

No worries, it will settle out as Jeremy stated.

Thanks for the help. I am going to be racking onto fruit anyway so I figured I will be able to cover any visual imperfections. Also, I worked with a 10# grain bill(5#wheat, 4#2row, 1#honey malt) and ended up with a 1.36 OG. Little lower than I expected to say the least. Not sure what happened here. Followed all the proper practices for mashing/lautering. Also, there seemed to be a film over my grain bed that resembled trub. Not sure if anyone else has experienced this.

I brew a lot of wheat based beers 60-40 for most of my grain bills, and as all said same look to boil. On my last Hef. I decided to go with a Decoction mash with a acid rest and a long protean rest the boil did not have any " egg-drop soup" look to it. As far as the finish beer they have all been fantastik, this I do think is my best Hef. yet. But it could just be my way of justifying that extra mash work
