Believe me, I'm always up to trying new beers and changing my opinions. I'm mostly speaking from the commercial examples I've had in the past (koko brown and my own attempt at using raw coconuts in my own brew)

where did you find extract? or was it made with vodka and shaved coconuts?

I follow you -- the one I made is much more "coconutty" than the commercial one I've tried.

I used 16 oz shaved coconut. I just toasted in the oven, tossed into a large grain sack that I had soaked in Star San, and then put the sack into the primary a week after brewing (I generally try to avoid using a secondary, and would have sucked getting the coconut into/out of a carboy). I didn't do anything else to sanitize the coconut on the theory that it came from a sealed package and was then heated in the oven sufficiently to hopefully kill off anything nasty, especially since it was going into beer that had probably hit its FG already.

16oz was enough for a 5gal batch im guessing then?
One of the first posts on this thread is someone saying they used 28 and would use more next time??

Hit a real rock when i mistakingly used sweetened coconut in my last attempt, i would say its my first dumper but my Gf dad loved it....who knows?

I should prob go over the pages but does anyone have a recipe close to maui coco porter or kona koko brown?

It was fantastic. Very smooth with a nice mild coconut flavor. One of my all time best. I will be doing it again later this month. 1oz. of coconut extract to half (2 1/2 gal.) The other half will be a vanilla Porter.

NRS

I made a coconut vanilla porter that I really liked a lot. You should mix a glass of the two and see what you think :mug:

I found the same thing in other threads when I was trying to decide how much to add to this beer (my first coconut beer). 16 oz seemed pretty avg, with some using much more, some much less, and still reporting good results. If you want a cocobomb go higher, but I personally was very happy with the amount of coconut flavor at 16 oz. Tastes differ and this is one of those you just have to experiment with to see what you like best!
