So I made a starter but couldn't brew so I threw the flask in the fridge for a night, decanted and transferred to a sanitized mason jar. I have roughly 20% headspace. This was one week ago.

My question is this - is there any way other than smelling the yeast to check for infections or contamination?

It can be difficult to smell an infection in yeast. Some yeast just stink to varying degrees. Visual signs are the best key to find an infection.

If your sanitation was impeccable, as it should when handling yeast, it will be fine. I do the same quite often, and never had a problem. Next time, save some of the decanted starter beer in another sanitized jar to top off your mason jar(s) after pouring or dividing the slurry.
