Cheap Keezer fan

I have seem a good amount of posts about people needing fans in their Keezer but don't want to buy the 12V AC to DC converter. Well check out this option.

All you need is an old computer fan, a USB cable and USB plug(almost everyone has these sitting around)

Cut one of the ends off the USB but don't cut the wire too short. Strip the wire to get to the four wires inside. You should have green white black and red wires. Cut off the Green and white, you will not need them. Strip the red and black wire. (I know the cable looks short in the pics but its about 5 ft long)

Get your fan. Cut off the connector and strip the red and black wire. Twist the red of the fan to the red of the USB cable and the same with the black.

Tape up the wires. Plug the USB into a USB slot or a USB plug and your fan should turn on.

Remember USB power is only 4.4V to 5.25V so the 12V fan will be slow but that is what some people want. Good Luck!

The project looks good. Only one issue though. How many people have a USB jack next to their keezers? I prefer to use a plug into the wall cell phone charger as a bunch of people have these lying around not used anymore. If you are uncertain as to which wires are the power wires you can always test them on the fan to see which ones make the fan spin correctly.

Yep, that's what I did - old computer fan (12V) + old wall cell phone charger (also 12V) - worked just fine.

I was talking about using a USB AC Plug. Something like this....

Great idea!

However I'd test that for a while before permanently locking it into my keezer. Some of these plugs can get pretty hot.

I had one melt on me because I hooked up a tablet computer that was trying to draw too much power. Luckily the burning smell tipped me off before the whole house went up.

I wired up two in series in my keezer, one to blow across my taps and the other to route air from the top to the bottom of the keezer.

There's no difference really between doing this with a USB cable and doing it with any old AC adapter - except you're going to get better performance with most AC adapters that have higher voltage. The blackberry charger I used is only 5 volts and I'm already getting ready to switch that out for something closer to 12 volts.
